Artist Statement

When I was a child, I observed my dad documenting our lives with pictures, and I became fascinated with photography. Growing up in a family of ten, there were plenty of images to capture: when our house burned, rebuilding our lives, receiving a kidney from my brother. Pictures showed where we came from and where we were headed, and I followed in Dad’s footsteps by telling stories with images. Dad also took his love of photography on the job with him, photographing virgin forests and rushing streams, and it was then that I became intrigued by landscape photography. Some of my most beloved subjects to photograph are the unexplored waterfalls and sweeping vistas in Dolly Sods, WV, and the rugged cliffs and lush greenery of Ireland. Another of my passions is harnessing the ominous beauty of lightning, and capturing the cosmos at night. As a teacher of writing, I often integrate photography, using pictures to tell a story.
